In September 1687, a shipwreck of two overcrowded boats with 137 Huguenot refugees on board, navigating on the Aar, a tributary of the Rhine between Aarberg and Lyss, killed 111 people. It was the most tragic shipwreck Switzerland ever experienced. A commemorative stone, dedicated to the shipwreck of 1687, was inaugurated on 16-17 September near the site of the drama.
