Raphael's Madonna restored

Raphael's Madonna del Cardellino (the Madonna of the Goldfinch) is one of the artists' most famous religious works. It was painted for the occasion of the marriage of Raphael's friend, Lorenzo Nasi, but was badly damaged in an earthquake in 1547. Although the owner did his best to repair it, the beautiful painting remained in a state of near-ruin until very recently when it was taken away for a thorough restoration. It is now back in place hanging in Room 26 of the Uffizi Gallery in better condition than it has been for the past five centuries.
