In 1998, it began a sustained development process promoted by various entities. It was decided to assemble the heritage elements of Romanesque style in the Sousa Valley region, and in 2006 in the Tâmega and Douro region in the North of Portugal. In 2010, the Route of the Romanesque was extended to 58 heritage elements of Romanesque style joined in a network and structured as a tourist route.
Since 2003, the heritage conservation has assumed a key role in this route to ensure and preserve historical heritage.
The Route of the Romanesque develops a number of aspects related to its promotion as a new cultural tourism product, to the production and dissemination of knowledge, community involvement and international cooperation. However, one of the most important aspects in all this process is the proud feeling of the regional community, and for that the identity is crucial.
