The ballade originally from the Legend of the master Manole and of another ballade, Miorita, are the two founding texts of the Romanian nation. Manole, master-mason, and his companions have to build the Monastery in Curtea de Arges (RO) (jewel of the Romanian religious architecture), but every night the day-work demolish. A human sacrifice is needed and reluctantly Manole will wall his wife in.

Mircea Eliade demonstrates that this legend stems from archaic construction rites attached to cosmogonic creation myths which essence is common to all the humanity.
